Satchels, hunters & unannounced social movements

What’s new this week? Schoolkids with aching schoolbags, hunting aint what it used be & a strike (in SNCF language a “social movement”) on our beloved RER.		Quoi de neuf cette semaine? Les écoliers ont mal au cartable, la chasse n’est plus ce qu’elle était + un mouvement social dans le RER.
And you call that NEW?		Et t’appelles ça neuf ?
This year, like every year, the kids go back to (or start school) and there’s this year’s report on the phenomenal weight of satchels – on average 20% of a child’s body weight instead of the maximum recommended; 10%		Comme à chaque rentrée des classes, un rapport qui attire l’attention de ceux qui s’y intéressent sur le poids du cartable – 20% du poids de l’enfant en moyenne au lieu de 10% maximum.
The only novelty in the article I read was that no one dares to propose a solution any more.		Seule nouveauté dans l’article que j’ai lu – personne n’a osé proposer de solution.
We say, « Poor little kids » and leave it at that.		On les plaint ces pauvres petits. Et c’est tout !
And don’t be surprised if the hunters you see in the fields this autumn don’t correspond to our usual stereotype.		Dans les champs cet automne ne vous étonnez pas de voir des chasseurs pas conformes au stéréotype que nous en avons.
Now it’s city-dwellers (even the sons of immigrants!) who are carrying on the tradition – passed on from father to son in days of yore.		Ce sont des citadins (parfois issus de l’immigration !) qui prennent la relève, qui jadis était plutôt de père en fils.
Speaking for myself, I’ll only be really surprised when it’s predominantly ladies shooting wildlife at the weekend.		Personnellement, je serai plus étonné quand le tour des chasseuses arrivera.
And on Monday we had that ‘unexpected’ (or ‘unannounced’) strike.		Et lundi c’était un mouvement social ‘inopiné’ qui nous a été servi.
I looked up the word ‘inopiné’ (already vaguely familiar) on Reverso and now it’s part of my active vocabulary.		J’ai cherché l’explication du mot (qui n’était que vaguement familier) sur Reverso et il fait désormais partie de mon vocabulaire.
I tried for an explanation of the strike itself on the SNCF blog – and came away none the wiser.		J’ai cherché l’explication de la grève sur le blog de la SNCF – avec moins de succès.
The following day I saw that the mystery of the burnt out scooters in the 17th arrondissement continues to deepen. The sole suspect picked was released despite all the lighters found in his possession.		Le lendemain je vois que le mystère des scooters incendiés dans le 17^e s’épaissit. Le seul suspect appréhendé vient d’être relâché malgré les nombreux briquets trouvé en sa possession.
